‘American Idol’: Who Will Be the First to Say Goodbye?

A sleepless night of research, phone calls, and meetings with lawyers has failed to yield results: Turns out there is no way to wipe the “American Idol” semifinalist slate clean and start over with a new group of 24. Given that, it’s worth considering that this is at least an implicit part of the show’s plan: some contestants are just there to fill space while the favorites gain strength and confidence. Having served their purpose, they begin to fall off during the early voting rounds, like outmoded appendages.

The women: Unless her voters are as active as her ArtsBeat commenters, Paige Miles will be heading home speedily. Same for Lacey Brown, who bungled her song so thoroughly that it even outweighed her comeback-kid storyline.

The men: Unless Tim Urban’s hair has bulletproof powers, he’ll be shipped back to emo-land tonight. After that, it’s a toss-up between six or seven others, but it’s likely that Jermaine Sellers‘ songs, and attitude, haven’t earned him much loyalty.

Who do you think is going to go home tonight?
