Curse broken! Cubs win World Series with epic Game 7

msn.com
CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Chicago Cubs won their first World Series championship since 1908 when Ben Zobrist hit a go-ahead double in the 10th inning, beating the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in a thrilling Game 7 delayed by rain early Thursday.
Lovable losers for generations, the Cubs nearly let this one get away, too. All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman blew a three-run lead with two outs in the eighth when Rajai Davis hit a tying homer.
But the Cubs, after tormenting their fans one more time, came right back after a 17-minute rain delay before the top of the 10th and scored twice. Davis hit an RBI single with two outs in the bottom half, but Mike Montgomery got the final out.
Manager Joe Maddon's team halted the longest title drought in baseball, becoming the first club to overcome a 3-1 Series deficit since the 1985 Kansas City Royals.
Cleveland was trying to win its first crown since 1948, but lost the last two games at home.
World Series favorites since spring training, Chicago led the majors with 103 wins this season. The Cubs then ended more than a century of misery for their loyal fans.

2016 Olympics TV schedule, Day 1 viewer's guide

Daniel Tran

What a way to start the Olympics. The Opening Ceremony was visually stunning and had all the style that Rio is known for. Now who is ready for the actual Games?
The Olympics get off to a fast start on Saturday, with medals already being awarded throughout the day.
What should I be watching?
Oh look, everyone! Sports other than soccer! Not that soccer is a bad sport, but too much of a good thing is always unhealthy. There are other events to enjoy, after all.
Morning slots:
Coverage of the Olympics starts bright and early at 8 a.m. ET on NBC with qualifying rounds of rowing and men’s road racing, but the real headliner in the 8 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. slot is the men’s water polo match between the United States and Croatia. Croatia is the defending Olympic champion and will be facing off against a hungry American team that finished fourth in FINA’s final rankings in 2015.
Americans Taylor Phinney and Brent Bookwalter will be huge underdogs in the men’s road cycling race. The U.S. was only able to send two riders, while powerhouses like Great Britain and Spain sent five-man teams. If you want an American underdog story to root for, this is the one.
Viewers will also be able to see some of the best sharpshooters of the world compete in team archery and women’s 10m air rifle shooting at 9 a.m. ET on NBCSN. The United States is looking to return to the podium for archery after winning a silver medal in 2012. If you’re a fan of firsts, the women’s 10m air rifle shooting event is expected to be the first event to award medals.

Afternoon slots
Stay tuned on NBCSN at noon ET when the United States women’s rugby sevens team takes on Fiji — the first rugby at the Olympics since 1924. If that wasn’t enough, the U.S. women play again at 5 p.m. ET on CNBC … on the same day. The Americans aren’t expected to medal but are a scrappy bunch that will surprise some rugby fans.
Also at noon ET is a women’s handball battle between Norway and host country Brazil on MSNBC. And no, this isn’t a team of players bouncing a ball off a wall. This is a physical sport that’s kind of like water polo on a basketball court. It’s not popular in the U.S., but it can be wildly entertaining.
If basketball is your thing, and you want a little taste before Team USA plays later on Saturday, Australia faces off against France on NBCSN at 1 p.m. ET. NBA players Tony Parker, Nicolas Batum, Boris Diaw and Rudy “the Stifle Tower” Gobert will represent the French, while Andrew Bogut and Patty Mills suit up for Australia.
Ending the afternoon session of games will be women’s soccer at 4 p.m. on NBCSN in what could be the United States’ toughest test in group play against France. Alex Morgan and Carli Lloyd shined bright for Team USA in their 2-0 win against New Zealand, but they will need to step up their efforts against France, who defeated Colombia 4-0 on Wednesday.

James and Cavaliers win thrilling NBA Finals Game 7, 93-89

msn.com

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- LeBron James cradled the shiny gold trophy and struggled to sum up what might be his sweetest championship yet, the one he is so proudly bringing home to his native northeast Ohio just as he promised to do when he returned to the Cavaliers two summers ago.
BOX SCORE:  CAVALIERS 93, WARRIORS 89
James and his relentless, never-count-them-out Cavs pulled off an improbable NBA Finals comeback, and Cleveland is title town again at long last.
Unfazed by the criticism and chatter all series, James delivered on a vow to his home state and brought the Cavs back as they became the first team to rally from a 3-1 finals deficit, beating the defending champion Golden State Warriors 93-89 on Sunday night to end a 52-year major sports championship drought in Cleveland.
"I'm happy to be a part of history," James said, then added, "I'm home. I'm home. ... I'm at a loss for words. This is unbelievable."
In a testy series of blowouts -- and a few blowups -- the winner-take-all Game 7 provided the thrilling finale with James as the finals MVP disarming two-time reigning MVP Stephen Curry and his record-setting Warriors.
Playing his sixth straight finals, James almost single-handedly carried the Cavs back into this series and finished with 27 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds as the Cavs captured their first championship in franchise history and gave their city its first major sports winner since the Browns won the NFL title in 1964. He also had three blocked shots and two steals, overcoming five turnovers.
"CLEVELAND! This is for you!" James bellowed in his postgame interview before being announced as finals MVP.
An emotional James fell to the floor when this one ended with a second win in six days on Golden State's imposing home floor, surrounded by his teammates. Only seconds earlier, he went down in pain with 10.6 seconds left after being fouled by Draymond Green while going for a dunk, then came back out to make the second of two free throws.
After four successful seasons in Miami and two titles with the Heat, James came back to the Cavs in hopes of winning the title this franchise and championship-starved city so coveted. It took a second try against Golden State after Cleveland lost to the Warriors in six games last year.
Cleveland did it after a coaching change, with Tyronn Lue taking over in January for the fired David Blatt.
"We made history tonight," Lue said. "Cleveland, Ohio, we're coming back, baby!"
Kyrie Irving scored 26 points to cap his brilliant finals, including a 3-pointer over Curry with 53 seconds left.
"It was a fairytale ending," Irving said.
Curry sat briefly on the bench to take in the scene after the Warriors made their last basket with 4:39 left.
"It hurts, man," Curry said. "I'm proud of every single guy that stepped foot on the floor for our team this year. ... Hopefully we'll have many more opportunities to fight for championships and be on this stage. This is what it's all about."
Green had 32 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists, but the Warriors' record-setting season ended without the only prize this close-knit "Strength In Numbers" crew cared about from way back in the beginning -- through the record 24-0 start as Coach of the Year Steve Kerr was out, Curry's second consecutive MVP campaign, and the 73 regular-season wins to break the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls' mark.
As Cleveland celebrated in the trophy ceremony, Green returned to the floor to congratulate the Cavs. He stopped by the winning locker room, too, and Warriors general manager Bob Myers delivered the winning nets freshly cut down.
The Warriors might always be remembered as one of the best teams ever that couldn't close it out, and Green is taking at least a good share of the blame after he sat out Game 5 on Monday night suspended for flagrant fouls.
The Cavs staved off elimination twice to force Game 7 back at Oracle Arena, where the Warriors went up 2-0 with a pair of lopsided wins to start this series.
This marked the first NBA game decided by five points or fewer since May 11, Golden State's 125-121 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 5 of the second round.
With its 100th postseason victory, Cleveland became just the fourth team to win an NBA Finals Game 7 on the road.
Curry -- who said beforehand he needed the best game of his career -- scored 17 points on 6-for-19 shooting, while Splash Brother Klay Thompson added 14 points while making 6 of 17 shots.
"I didn't do enough to help my team win," Curry said. "It will haunt me for a while."

Super Bowl 50: Time, date, TV channel and halftime show info

 www.sportingnews.com

Super Bowl 50 — as George R. R. Martin might say — is coming. And this game of NFL thrones will likely feature a cast of characters and drama worthy of its own miniseries. The Patriots continue their Deflategate revenge tour despite a rash of injuries. The Broncos remain embroiled in a quarterback question as Brock Osweiler performs ably in Peyton Manning's stead. And the Bengals want to shake their one-and-done reputation, but have Andy Dalton's injured thumb complicating matters.
Meanwhile, the NFC playoff picture features some scary teams — and Washington. The Panthers and Cardinals might be the two best teams in the league, taking health into account, while the Packers, Vikings and Seahawks all possess the personnel to make a playoff run.
But in the end, only two teams will make it. And once again, America will watch en masse. So here's what you need to know in order to prepare for the party and set your TV for the big game.
When is the Super Bowl?
Super Bowl 50 kicks off on Sunday, Feb. 7, two weeks after the NFC conference championship and AFC conference championship games.

What time is the Super Bowl?

The Super Bowl is set to start at 6:30 p.m. ET.

What TV channel is the Super Bowl on?

CBS will broadcast Super Bowl 50, the first time they've done so since 2013 and following the set three-year cycle of Fox-NBC-CBS. CBS broadcast the first Super Bowl in 1967 — the only time a Super Bowl was carried on two networks. NBC also carried the contest.

Where is the Super Bowl this year?

Super Bowl 50 will be played in Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. The stadium, home to the San Francisco 49ers, opened in 2014 and seats nearly 70,000 fans.

Who is performing in the Super Bowl halftime show?

In what looks like a departure from the likes of Bruno Mars and Katy Perry, the 2016 Super Bowl will feature Coldplay as the halftime act. The move has been defended in this space, but drew some criticism from those who felt the British rock band's more mellow tone might not match the atmosphere of a Super Bowl Sunday.
